History: The American Cancer Society developed the Relay For Life in 1992 as a signature event. 189 Relay For Life communities raised $4,000,000 for the ACS in its inaugural year, with 2,150 communities raising $89,000,000 in 1998. Relay For Life has become the largest, most high profile, fundraising event in the history of the United States. 1999: In 1999, the Canadian Cancer Society launched a pilot Relay For Life event in Ottawa which raised over $87,000. 2009: In Ontario, Relay For Life raised over $17 million, including an amazing $240,000 at the Peterborough County event.
